The Baltimore Ravens were formed in 1996 when Art Modell (owner of the Cleveland Browns) announced that he would move his team to Baltimore. The announcement generated quite a bit of controversy and ultimately resulted in the Brown’s name, colors, uniform design, and franchise records remaining in Cleveland. The ‘reactivated’ Cleveland Browns would begin play in 1999, while some of the former players and staff would move to Baltimore to form the Ravens franchise.
The Ravens’ first season resulted in a 4-12 losing record, though it wouldn’t be long before this newly formed team started posting winning seasons. However, it wasn’t without a few bumps along the way. By March 2000, Modell was instructed to initiate sales of his franchise because of financial instablity. Later that month, a deal was reached in which 49% of the Ravens would be sold to Steve Biscoitti. It must have been just what the team needed because that same year they became Super Bowl Champions. They appeared in Super Bowl XXXV and easily dominated the New York Giants for a 34-7 win.
In 2005, Modell officially transferred his remaining 51% ownership to Biscoitti thus ending his 40-year run as an NFL franchise owner. Though the team has done well for the most part, making the playoffs three times since their Super Bowl win, they have been unable to replicate the success of their 2000 season.
They are headquartered in Owings Mills, Maryland and play their home games in the M&T Bank Stadium. They are part of the AFC North.
