The Dallas Cowboys joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1960. Since their inception, they have become one of the most successful franchises in the modern era of the NFL. They recently moved into Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, Texas, which was completed just in time for the start of the 2009 season. They currently play in the NFC East.
The Cowboys, under the direction of famed head coach Tom Landry, started off by slowly but surely and built up a strong team. By 1966 they posted their first winning season and entered into the playoffs. In 1966 and 1967, the team made it to the NFL Championship Game but lost to the Green Bay Packers both times. The latter game became known as the Ice Bowl, as it was played in the coldest weather in US sports history.
The team continued to do well all through the 60s and 70s, making it to the playoffs nearly every year, continually winning division championships, becoming conference champions five times in ten years, and Super Bowl Champions twice. By the 1980s, the team’s success slowed. They continued to post winning seasons and making it to the playoffs, but it wasn’t as consistent as in previous years.
Landry was replaced by Jimmy Johnson in 1989, and even with the acquisition of future QB star Troy Aikman, the team finished with a 1-15 record. It was the worst in the franchise’s history. Over the next few years, Johnson continually drafted young, up and coming players such as Emmett Smith, Russell Maryland and Erik Williams. The combination of these young players with solid veterans created a winning combination for the Cowboys. By 1992, the team was back on top, winning their first Super Bowl in 15 years. They followed it up with another Super Bowl championship in 1993. Due to friction, Johnson retired just weeks after the Super Bowl win. Since then, though they have gone through a couple of coaches, the team has been mostly successful.
