Established in 1919, the Green Bay Packers are the third oldest franchise in the NFL. They started out as a semi professional team, but joined the American Professional Football Association in 1921. They are the only non-profit, community owned professional major league sports team in the US. They currently play in the NFC North and share an intense rivalry with the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears, and Dallas Cowboys.
When the team first joined the league in 1921, they hit the ground running. They won nine League Championships, the first one in 1929. However, after 1931, the team started to drop off. Though this part of the team’s history is spattered with good seasons, they were on a steady decline. In 1959, legendary coach Vince Lombardi took over the ailing Packers and gradually shaped the team into a winning machine. By 1965 they were back on top and winning three back-to-back championships. Unfortunately, they lost Lombardi in 1967 and it was back to the bottom for the Packers.
They struggled all through the 70s, 80s, and early 90s until General Manager Ron Wolf was hired and cleaned house. Mike Holmgren was named head coach and Brett Favre was drafted as the team’s new starting QB. Starting in 1992, the Packers put up 13 straight non-losing seasons. They made it to two Super Bowls, one of which resulted in a win. Favre left the packers before the 2008 season. They posted a 6-10 record that year, but have been steadily improving.
