In 1995, the NFL made the decision to add two new expansion teams to the League. There were five cities being considered for the new expansion teams, including Jacksonville, Floridia; Charlotte, North Carolina; St Louis, Missouri; Baltimore, Maryland; and Memphis, Tennessee. In the end, Jacksonville won out and in 1995 formed the Jaguars. They were one of two expansion teams to be included in the NFL in nearly 20 years.
Though the team got off to a rocky start, by 1996 they posted their first winning season and headed to the playoffs. In fact, they became the first expansion team in NFL history to make the playoffs three times in their first four seasons. The success didn’t last though, as the team began to lose talented players because of their poor salary cap. By 2000, the team was consistently losing games. After two negative seasons, team owner Wayne Weaver cleaned house. He fired head coach Tom Coughlin and all of his staff and named Jack Del Rio as the new head coach. Weaver’s plan wasn’t an immediate success. They posted a 5-11 record in 2003, but bounced back in 2004 with a 9-7 record. 2005 marked the first time that the team made it to the playoffs in five years. Since then, like many other teams, they continue with mixed success, making the playoffs only once. They currently play in the AFC South.
