The Chiefs were established in 1960 as the Dallas Texans. They were a charter member of the American Football League. In 1963, the team moved to Kansas City and were renamed the Chiefs. They currently play in the AFC West.
From 1960 to 1969, the Chiefs were a winning team. In fact, they became the second AFL team to beat an NFL franchise in the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. In 1970, the team transitioned to the NFL as part of the NFL-AFL Merger. During their first NFL season, the only won seven games and missed the playoffs. However, not to be detoured, the Chiefs followed it up with a winning season in 1971 and won the AFC West Division Championship. This would be their last playoff appearance for 15 years. Beginning in 1975, the Chiefs fell out of contention and became the laughing stock of the NFL. Their slump lasted for the next 13 years as they tried everything, including five different head coaches, to create another winning team.
In 1989, Marty Schottenheimer was hired as the club’s seventh head coach. He was given the monumental task of bringing this team back up from the depths. It was a task that he was up for and, in the next few years, Schottenheimer managed to do just that. By 1993, the team was back at the top, posting their most successful record in 22 years. With notable players such as QB Joe Montana and RB Marcus Allen the team managed to make it to their first and only (to date) AFC Championship Game. They went on to lose to the Buffalo Bills, but the team showed a drastic improvement.
Since, the team has gone through a few more head coaches, several players, and have posted good and bad seasons. By the end of the 2008 season, the Chiefs were back at the bottom, posting a franchise worst record of 2-14.
