Oakland Raiders

Established: 1960
Home Field: Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum – Oakland, California
Owner(s): Al Davis
General Manager: Al Davis
Head Coach: Tom Cable

The Raiders were established in 1960 as a charter member of the AFL. They were established as a replacement for Minnesota who accepted an offer to join the NFL. The Raiders were originally called the Oakland SeƱors and joined the NFL in 1970 as part of the AFL-NFL Merger. They currently play in the ACF West.

The team kicked off their inaugural year with a 37-22 loss to the Houston Oilers. Things didn’t get any better as the season rolled on. In fact, the team continued to post losing seasons for their first two years. It wasn’t until the 1963 season and the hiring of Al Davis as the head coach and General Manager that the team posted their first winning season (10-7). From then on, they steadily improved, winning an AFL Championship in 1967 and a trip to Super Bowl II where they lost to Green Bay.

In 1969 famed NFL player John Madden became the head coach of the Raiders. He shaped the team into one of the most successful franchises at the time. All through the 70s, the Raiders made it to the playoffs, won division titles, and even took home a Super Bowl championship in 1976. Madden left the Raiders in 1979 and was replaced by Tom Flores. In 1980, Flores, with the help of replacement QB Jim Plunkett, led the team to another Super Bowl title. He did it again in 1983 for the third and last Super Bowl Championship to date.

After the 1983 season, the team lost some of its consistency. Since, they have only made eight playoff appearances and have largely been out of contention since 2002.
