Philadelphia Eagles

Established: 1933
Home Field: Lincoln Financial Field – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Owner(s): Jeffrey Lurie
General Manager: Tom Heckert
Head Coach: Andy Reid

The Eagles were established in 1933 as a replacement for the bankrupt Frankford Yellow  Jackets. Their name pays homage to the Blue Eagle, which was a symbol used for the New Deal stimulus program put into action by Franklin Roosevelt in the 1930s. They currently play in the NFC East. The team got off to a pretty rough start to say the least. They struggled over their first decade of existence, never winning more than three games in a season. In 1940, the team went through some pretty major changes due to a change in ownership. For starters, the franchise (but not the team) was swapped with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Philadelphia organization moved to Pittsburgh, and the Pittsburgh organization moved to Philadelphia, leaving only the team nicknames in the original cities. Despite the swap and a new head coach, the team continued to struggle. It wasn’t until 1943, when they combined with the Steelers because of the player shortage during World War II that the team posted a winning season. The success carried over after the two teams separated in 1944 with the Eagles not only consistently posting winning seasons through the upcoming years, but also making it to the NFL Championship game in 1948.

After achieving their third NFL Championship title in 1960, the Eagles had mixed success throughout the rest of the 60s and most of the 70s. However, by 1979, the team had once again morphed into a major contender. In fact, in 1980, after a successful regular season, the Eagles made it to their second NFL Championship game. Unfortunately, they lost to Oakland. The team continued with fairly consistent success, with regular trips to the playoffs, several division championships and even a Super Bowl appearance in 2004.
