St. Louis Rams

Established: 1936
Home Field: Edward Jones Dome – St. Louis, Missouri
Owner(s): Chip Rosenbloom, Lucia Rodriguez and Stan Kroenke
General Manager: Billy Devaney
Head Coach: Steve Spagnuolo

This team was originally established in 1936 as the Cleveland Rams. They were a charter member of the second American Football League. The team moved to Los Angeles in 1946 and became the Los Angeles Rams. Finally, before the 1995 season, the team moved to St Louis where they are headquartered today. They currently play in the NFC West.

The Rams started off strong, placing second in the AFL in their first year of play. Unfortunately, they followed it up with a losing season as they moved to the NFL to replace the St Louis Gunners. They finished their first season in the NFL with a disappointing 1-10 record. The team continued to struggle through the early 40s. However, in 1945, under the guidance of new head coach Adam Walsh and rookie QB Bob Waterfield, the team made it to their first NFL Championship Game. They defeated the Washington Redskins to take the championship title.

In 1946, the team relocated to Los Angeles where they would stay for the next 15 seasons. They finished their first season in LA with a 6-4-1 record, putting them in second place just behind the Bears. The team continued to improve, and by 1949, they started their most successful era of play. Between the years of 1949 and 1955, they made it to the NFL Championship Game four times, winning once in 1951.

The success wasn’t to last and by 1956 the team was struggling. This down time would last for ten years, until the emergence of the “Fearsome Foursome” defense (Rosey Grier, Merlin Olsen, Deacon Jones, and Lamar Lundy) that restored the team’s success through the late 60s. Despite a short rebuilding period in the 70s, the team continued to post winning seasons and consistently claimed the NFC West Division Championship title throughout the 70s.

Again, the success didn’t last and the team fell on hard times by the end of the 80s. The Rams were moved to St Louis, but even that couldn’t save them. In fact, they didn’t make another playoff appearance until 1999 when they went on to become Super Bowl Champions. They continued to post winning seasons throughout 2004.
