Tennessee Titans

Established: 1960
Home Field: LP Field – Nashville, Tennessee
Owner(s): Bud Adams
General Manager: Mike Reinfeldt
Head Coach: Jeff Fisher

The Titans were established in 1960 as the Houston Oilers.  They were a charter member of the American Football League. The team relocated to Tennessee in 1997 and played for two seasons as the Tennessee Oilers.  They eventually changed their name to the Titans and currently play in the AFC South.

Before the 1970 AFL-NFL Merger, the Houston Oilers enjoyed plenty of success as a team, appearing in the first three AFL Championships. However, after the merger, the team sank to the bottom of the AFC Central division. This is where they remained until Hall of Fame coach Sid Gilman rebuilt the team and helped them to a .500 record by the end of the 1974 season. From then on, the team’s success would be up and down with each passing decade. In 1996, due to dwindling success and crowds, owner Bud Adams moved his team to Tennessee.

The Tennessee Oilers had trouble from the start, as there was some confusion over the location of the team. It was headquartered in Nashville, but played home games in Memphis. This confusion led to painfully small crowds, and Adams was forced to move the home games to Vanderbilt University in Nashville. With a new stadium came a new name. Dubbed the Titans, the team finished the 1999 season with a 13-3 winning record and an appearance in the Super Bowl. They lost to the Rams 23-16 when Kevin Dyson was tackled one yard from the end zone.

The Titans remained successful until 2004 when they fell out of contention due to an injury plagued team. Again, they entered a time of rebuilding that didn’t payoff until 2007.  Unfortunately, the success didn’t last and the Titans have once again dropped to the bottom of their division.
