Washington Redskins

Home Field: FedExField – Landover, Maryland
Owner(s): Dan Snyder
General Manager: Bruce Allen
Head Coach: Jim Zorn

The Redskins entered the NFL in 1932 as the Boston Braves. They were renamed the Boston Redskins before becoming the Washington Redskins in 1937. They currently play in the NFC East.

Upon their inception, the team had mixed results. They went through four head coaches in their first four years with various degrees of success. It wasn’t until they hired Ray Flaherty in 1936 and acquired QB “Slingin’ Sammy” Baugh in 1937 that the team won their first NFL title. They continued to do well throughout the 30s and early 40s, winning another NFL title in 1942. Though, by 1945, the Redskins had began to decline and fell out of contention for nearly 30 years.

In 1971, the team named George Allen as the head coach who began to revive the Redskins. By 1972, they were back on the top with a Conference Championship title and a place in Super Bowl VII. Unfortunately, they were defeated by the Miami Dolphins. Despite their Super Bowl loss, it was the start of a successful time for the Redskins, and under Allen’s guide the team consistently made it through to the postseason. Joe Gibbs replaced Allen in 1981 and continued to lead the Redskins to success. In fact, they won the Super Bowl – their first NFL Championship title in 40 years – in 1982. They followed it up with another five years later, and yet another in 1991.

Gibbs retired in 1993, which seemingly marked the beginning of another long dry spell for the team. They fell largely out of contention after the 1992 season, and wouldn’t make it through to the playoffs again until 1999. In 2004, head coach Daniel Snyder lured Gibbs back to the Redskins to act as head coach and team president. With Gibbs once again calling the shots, the team made it through to the playoffs in 2005 and 2007.
